Central project management in healthcare makes sense. Health care organizations live in a dynamic environment with new standards, guidelines, regulations, and innovations erupting daily. High-performing (and those striving to be) organizations want to take advantage of funding opportunities that help them incorporate new processes to meet standards and to survive in the ever-changing healthcare milieu. Similarly, they may desire to incorporate innovations to improve care, achieve recognition, and/or attract funders. Although changes, improvements, and compliance are necessary and expected of healthcare organizations, your team members may consider them a necessary evil. As many organizations are resource deficient, staff wear many hats and often have difficulty completing one project, not to mention three or four.
Although your team members are Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in medicine, finance, or IT, they may not have the technical skills to manage multiple projects. At least not yet.
So, what is “Management by Projects” (MBP)? A response to global requirements to produce more with less. MBP uses formal project management techniques for all projects in an organization. MBP is executed through a Project Management Office (PMO). A PMO can leverage resources and knowledge from other projects to assist current projects. As listed in the Project Management Training Institute’s Project Management Office: A Framework for Development, a few high-level benefits of a PMO are that it
  • Facilitates strategic planning (identifies and communicates stakeholder needs and gaps in products and services).
  • Focuses on corporate priorities (minimizes scope creep)
  • Removes political bias from progress reporting
  • Improves communication throughout the organization
  • Identifies, minimizes, and mitigates risk (aids in reducing cost, project time, resources)
  • Reinforces a results-oriented organizational focus (prioritizes your Key Performance Indicators)
  • Simplifies resource planning across multiple projects (identifies and catalogs the systems, policies and best practices to be used in multiple projects)

Central project management and a formal project management strategy make sense for your organization.
